A fan of mystery, suspense and thrillers, I could not wait to dive into Promises to Keep by Megan Beaumont.  Filled with colorful characters, lots of action and plenty of cringe worthy criminal behavior, this is a book which grabs your attention from the first page.  Although the third book in the Sabrina Vaughn Series, I found that I was able to read and enjoy this on its own.

Ms. Beaumont does a very good job developing the main characters of Michael O’Shea and Sabrina Vaughn right from the start.  A dangerous man with unique skills and the rare ability to kill almost anyone, Michael has been forced into the position of working for one man, Livingston Shaw.  A position he hates and would do almost anything to get out of.  Although the author first introduces Michael as a “gun for hire”, he’s a likeable character and as you get to know him, he’s not quite what you expect.  He started out in the business of killing as a way of getting revenge for what had been done to his family but he’s definitely got a moral code and a soft side he hides.

I also connected with Sabrina easily; she’s smart, a good cop and dedicated to her family.  Just getting back into the homicide department at work, she finds herself drawn into a case involving a dead child.  While it takes a bit longer go get to know Sabrina, she’s also likeable right from the start.  Plus it helps that Michael has been thinking about her from the very first page and we know that somehow he was involved in saving her life during a previous case she was involved with.

The secondary characters are very interesting and I really enjoyed getting to know Ben Shaw, Michael’s reluctant partner and the son of the man forcing Michael to work for him.  While I expected Ben to be a complete jerk, he does have some redeeming qualities and genuinely seems to want to help Michael find a way out of his predicament.  Ms. Beaumont created a lot of secondary characters for this book and she did a very good job with the ones engaged in criminal behavior – the drug dealers were scary and the other bad guys were just as creepy.  The mystery is well developed and Ms. Beaumont's voice as a writer is well developed, taught and experienced.  The story's pace is moderate to quick and there are plenty of twists and turns to keep you turning the pages to discover what will develop next.

Will Michael and Sabrina find themselves on opposite sides of the law while trying to discover the identity of the dead child?   Will Michael finally be able to gain his freedom and be able to make a life for himself that might include Sabrina, the woman he can’t forget?  You’ll have to read Promises to Keep to find out.  I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the previous books in the series to find out more about Sabrina and Michael’s pasts.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars
