About the book:

Shy Jane Spyrus loves gadgets. She can build anything B.L.I.S.S. needs in the international organization’s fight against crime-although its agents aren’t exactly lining up at her door. Some of them think her inventions are a little too . . . well, innovative. Like her shrink-wrap prophylactic constraints, or her spray-on truth serum.

Of course, you can’t use wacky inventions to fix all your problems; Jane knows that better than anyone. Her neighbor has been kidnapped, driving that point home. She will have to team up with another human being-and Abel Andretti arrives just in time. He will help Jane find her neighbor, stop a villain, and most of all he will show Jane to love the daylights out of something without batteries.

A fan of Lynsay Sands Argenaeu series, I jumped at the chance to read and review The Loving Daylights, her contribution to a parody series based on the James Bond novels.  Best described as contemporary romance with quite a bit of comedy, Ms. Sands contribution is fun, light and fairly faithful to the Bond series.  If you’re a fan of spy books and movies, you’ll definitely want to give this series a try.

The only child of two B.L.I.S.S. agents killed in the line of duty, Jane Spyrus, is a woman who loves to tinker with gadgets.  More “Q” than “Bond”, Jane has followed her father’s footsteps into research at B.L.I.S.S. and is quite happy helping agents in the field with her creations.  All of that changes however when best friend and neighbor, Edie Andretti, is kidnapped and Jane decides to enter the field to save her friend.  Joined by Abel Andretti, Edie’s accountant brother, and Maggie Spyrus, Jane’s wheelchair bound grandmother and former agent for B.L.I.S.S., Jane and her gang set out to save Edie and test Jane’s inventions in the field.

Ms. Sands does a good job developing the characters in this story; at the beginning Jane is somewhat shy and unsure of herself but as she spends time with both Abel and Maggie as they work to locate and free Edie, she gains confidence and realizes she’s got what it takes to be in the field.  I also enjoyed getting to know Abel, an accountant who turned out to be quite good at following directions and was able to help Jane in the field.  The real agent of the group though is Maggie, Jane’s father’s mother, who was a real B.L.I.S.S. agent forced into retirement when a mission went south and she was forced into a wheelchair.  Maggie was smart, funny and clearly loves Jane and will do whatever it takes to help her granddaughter and keep her safe.

The gadgets developed by Jane are a good part of the story, and it was interesting to read how and why Jane created them.  The villains are also well developed and I enjoyed the action in the story as the gang goes from Canada to California in their quest to rescue Edie.  One of the more comedic aspects of the book is the character names Ms. Sands uses, and how they relate to both her other books/series and the bond series.

Will Jane and sidekicks be able to save Edie before it’s too late?  Will the villains get what they deserve? You’ll have to read The Loving Daylights to find out.  I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the other books in this series.
